OUR TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

SCIENTIFIC TRAINING METHODS

PERIODIZATION

Periodization is the only way to developing a professional fitness level, but also the key to keep the motivation of a player at a maximum level and prevent him from getting too many injuries and finally burn out.

There is no player in the world, who is able to train a full year in a row without having main events to focus on and breaks to look forward to, in order to relax and reload his energy. That‘s why it is important to have main events and goals throughout a year to structure the training and tournament plan around it.

In sports science we speak of mini cycles and maxi cycles. Usually an athlete can have 3-4 maxi cycles in one year. In tennis this is not so easy because there are more than 4 main events in one year a player wants to be on top of his game. At HTT we usually plan the periodization cycles around the grand slam events and have maxi cycles of approximately 6-8 weeks. These cycles include 3-4 weeks of training and 3-4 tournaments. Preparation tournaments and then the main event, a player want to be on the top of his game (like the Grand Slams...). After each cycle there is a rest period where the player has enough time to reload his energy and get new motivation for the next cycle.

A mini cycle is a training week, which is also structured like a maxi-cycle with a rest period on the weekend. This guarantees a supercompensation effect (see next column) which is the main training principle in sports.

With these periodization cycles we gradually build up our players and bring them from one level to the next one, without risking a burn out or lack of motivation.

PERIODIZATION - GRADUALLY BUILDS UP ATHLETES WITHOUT BURN OUTS

LONG RUN  DEVELOPMENT

If a player wants to make it to the top of the tennis world, he has to go through a long process of developing his techniques, tactcics, fitness and mental abilities.

There are no short cuts in the way to success, even though many of our students have experienced the great feeling that a coach can give them with a few words and hours

of practic sometimes. Of course, sometimes just a few adjustments can make a big difference in a players game. But in general we have to tell our players and their parents,

that there is no coach in the world, who can do magic and produce a star with the snap of two fingers. Or push just one button and all of a sudden the forhand is a killer-shot.

And if any coach tells you that he can do this, he is probably better in talking than in coaching and you should look for somebody else...

To develope a great athlete it takes time! If it would be possible to do it in a few months, everybody would do it, right?!?

And many times the results come slowly first and the big success starts coming only after years of hard work.

But if the players do what we advise, we can guarantee you consistant improvement and success which the HTT-TRAINING SYSTEM has proved for more than 20 years.

But many times, especially when a player starts working with HTT at a later stage of his career, some changes have to made to put him on the track to success. And changes

can sometimes mean that we have to accept a step backwards first to make a big difference in the end.

When we start working with a player we first ask and determine where the player wants to go with his career. What his big time goals are. Then we can develope short term

goals and a path and plans how to get to the short term goals and finally to the big one.

We believe that you have to look at the big picture first and then start working on the details. You need to know where you want o be in the long run, before you can start

walking towards your goal and find the best and fastest way to get where you want to be. Especially developing a professional level of fitness is a long process which needs a scientific approach. But it is the same with developing techniques and tactics. It takes about 12 years to be a technically complete player. The process of developing the right attitude for success might even take longer and is something we can work on our whole life. But in order to get what we want we have to be very sure about what we want, then develope a long term plan and short term goals and steps of how to get there. This is how we believe to be successful in the end.

BIG TIME GOAL + SHORT TERM GOALS + LONG TERM PLAN + SHORT-TERM PLAN + NEVER GIVING UP = SUCCESS IN THE LONG RUN !

SUPERCOMPENSATION

The main principle in any athletic training in sports is called Supercompensation.

This is what it‘s all about, when we work with players, who are serious about improving their game and their fitness. To use this phenomenon or principle of the human body perfectly, it requires scientific training methods, but also a lot of experience from the coaches. Here is a short and hopefully easy to understand explanation of the Supercompensation principle:

In general you can say that supercompensation is the phenomenon of the human body ,that reloads the energy level an athlete had before the start of his training, above the initial level. To put it in other easy words, we are teasing the body with our training, so the body creates more energy for the next exercise.

The harder the training was, the more rest the body needs inbetween the exercises. But if the rest period is too long, the body forgets about the teasing and does not provide more energy anymore. If we start to train to soon again, the body is still tired from the last exercise and the energy level will not go up, but down!

The secret to successful training is to find the exact amount of time and intensity for the training, as well as the right amount of rest inbetween the training sessions. The rest period is the tricky part and is often underestimated by coaches or players. So, how do we find the exact dosis of both, training and resting period?

It‘s 50% experience  of our coaches and 50% scientific methods that we are using and that determines the exact timing of our training.

By doing detailed performance diagnosis before and after each periodization cycle, we can check the energy level of our players and also document the improvements after each cycle of training and competition.

Like this we not only keep up the motivation and limit the injuries of our players, but most importantly guarantee the most effective training for our athletes.

SUPERCOMPAENSATION - THE SECRET TO PROGRESS AND SUCCESS IN TRAINING

BODY BALANCE

A big problem in tennis is it‘s one-dimensional stress on the body, because most of the time a player is using only one arm for his shots.

This leads to disbalances in the muscular structure of the athletes body. And this is the main reason for most of the injuries in tennis. Even in younger years some careers come to an early end, because of back-problems, which are in 99% of the times caused be the one-dimensional stress on one side of the core.

To prevent our players from having to quit their careers or interrupt their training and tournament plans, we do everything to keep the bodies of our players in balance. Another positive side-effect is a much better body balance for the shots, which leads to more power and precision, as well.

To keep the body and muscles in balance, we do a lot of exercises during the work on the court, in between the technique training drills, but also in the physical conditioning sessions off court.

MUSCLE AND BODY BALANCE - THE SECRET TO GREAT SHOTS AND NO INJURIES !

THE RIGHT ATTITUDE

If a player does not have the right attitude, even the biggest talent will not be enough to get to the top of pro tennis.

And even more sadly, he will never be able to say the he reached his full potential.   And that is our goal when we start working with a player. Make him reach his full potential and make the most out of his God given talent.  Of course, a player who wants to be a professional (even if does not have a clue yet, what is necessary to get there and how good he needs to be to get there...), has to have a certain attitude towards winning already.

But we believe that it is possible to change our way of thinking, our values and our character qualities to a certain degree.

The younger a player is, the more he can be influenced in a positive way towards his work ethic, will power, determination and other attitudes that are important for being successful at what we do.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING A PLAYER NEEDS TO DEVELOP, IS THE RIGHT ATTITUDE !

NEVER GIVE UP!

There are many players whom have a lot of talent, possibilities and even many good character qualities to be successful in pro-tennis. But if one thing is missing they might still  never make it.  A player has to be persistent at following his goals and plans. There will be never a career without any down-slopes and times when things are not easy for a young player. And this is exactly where a player and his team has to be the strongest and be persistent. When things go wrong it is very easy to give up and since it is so easy, that‘s what many players and parents do. They don‘t realise that everyone is going through these times in a career. And this is where it will  be determined if a player makes it to the top or not. The ones who give up a little later will succeed. And mainly, because so many other quit and stop competing on a high level with them.

The ability to keep fighting, even when you DON‘T see the light at the end of the tunnel, is what separates the champions from the losers.

LOSERS QUIT - WINNERS NEVER EVEN THINK ABOUT IT !

PERFECT TECHNIQUES

Another very important point of our training philosophy, is to teach our players all the necessary techniques in tennis and use the principles of biomechanics to develop perfect shots.

We believe that in today‘s and tomorrows pro-tennis, players need to be able to play every shot, from slice, to volley, drop-shot and kick-serve and smash.

If a player has just one weakness in his game, the other player can take advantage of that (if he does not have a weakness himself) and win the match with ease.

Only if a player has all the shots, he can play different tactics to defeat different opponents.

A perfect technique is the reason why a shot develops into a weapon and is played with consistency and confidence.

The shot with a bad technique, is the first one to break down, when nerves come into play and the matches are on the edge.

That‘s why perfect techniques are necessary, to play consistent and confident tennis, no matter what score and pressure situation.

PERFECT TECHNIQUES - GIVE CONFIDENCE AND CONSISTENCE - ENABLES OUR PLAYERS TO PLAY ANY TACTIC THYE NEED TO !

FITNESS AND NUTRITION

In today‘s professional sport, fitness becomes a more and more important factor and there are no players anymore who don‘t have a body-fat-percentage of more than 10% for men and 17%  for women.

The less weight an athlete has the less stress is on his body and the faster he can move.

But even more importantly a good nutrition is like high octane fuel for a race car and will give a player extra energy and the ability to create muscle mass.

That‘s why nutrition is a big factor, if an athlete wants to reach his full potential and that‘s why we are giving all our players personal nutrition plans.

NUTRITION - THE FUEL FOR THE BODY AND THE REASON FOR A HIGH ENERGY LEVEL !

STRONG COACH = STRONG PLAYER

Only if a player knows exactly what he needs to do and is 100% convinced that his plan will succeed, he can play strong and with confidence and win.

That‘s why it is so important to have a strong coach who has a clear idea about what he wants to see from his players and knows exactly what he is talking about.

Only if a player knows exactly what his strengths, tactics and game plan is, he can execute the plan.

It is the same thing with his every day training. A player needs to know exactly what he needs to work on. He needs to know what his weaknesses and his strengths are, to be able to improve his game and finally believe in his game and play without doubt. And only a player without doubt, is a strong player. And that‘s what we are trying to develop in the end. Strong and independent players with a clear vision of their goals, plans and abilities. Only if a coach tells a player exactly and in a convincing way what he needs to do to be successful, the players can believe to 100% that what they are doing is the right thing and will succeed in the end.

We believe that a coach will get the most out of a player, if he is very clear about his training demands and strict in his way to demand 100% effort from his players.

Both, he coach and the player should give 100% in every training session!

THAT‘S WHY WE BELIEVE THAT A STRONG COACH WILL DEVELOP STRONG PLAYERS !

INDIVIDUAL COACHING

We believe that every player is different and has his own way of playing and winning. That‘s why we believe that every player, especially on the top level when details matter more than in the beginning of a players career, it is important to have individual coaching and training sessions.

At an early stage of the development of a top player, when he learns the basics of tennis and we set a foundation of a fitness level, individual training is not necessary. But as soon as the players have learned more and more, details become more important. And that‘s when individual coaching can make the difference between winning and losing.

It probably shows the most in physical conditioning, a factor that becomes more and more important in today‘s pro tennis.

At a top level little things become more important. And with different tournament schedules and results, every player will be on a different level of energy at a certain time and therefore needs different training intensities. Something that is very difficult to handle for a coach if 4 players train in one group together and all players have different fitness levels.

This carries on in all other parts of the training, like tactics, techniques and most importantly, the mental aspects of the game.
